The national AAUP, American Association of University Professors (https://www.aaup.org/), founded in 1915, is a non-partisan, nonprofit membership association of faculty and other academic professionals. Its mission includes defining fundamental professional values and standards for higher education and advancing the rights pertaining to academic freedom, shared governance, and other core principles such as diversity and inclusion and the equitable participation of faculty regardless of appointment category.
As an independent and longstanding association of higher-education faculty, the national AAUP offers opportunities to learn about how faculty elsewhere are confronting key issues related to higher education. By helping us build relationships with the national professoriate, the AAUP can empower us to promote sound governance on our own campus.
There are over 500 chapters nationwide, including ours at Barnard College and one at Columbia University, with whom we work closely. Almost half of Barnard’s faculty have become active members already. Barnard’s AAUP chapter can accomplish things that individual faculty members can’t do alone or through our internal College service work. The Barnard chapter just formed in Spring 2024, and it has already been crucial in making administrators, trustees, alumni, donors, students, and the public hear faculty concerns.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT MEMBERSHIP
Who is eligible to join?
Faculty of all ranks. Staff with teaching and research responsibilities, including all library staff. (Top-level staff and administrators may not join.)
Should members of the Barnard Contingent Faculty Union (BCF-UAW) join?
Yes, the organizations do different things. While BCF-UAW protects individual faculty members, AAUP is able to mobilize the entire faculty around policy and more. Contingent faculty who also teach at other institutions are permitted to calculate dues based only on their Barnard income.
Can I use Barnard funds to pay my dues?
You may use research funds, if you have them, and your department may have funds for professional memberships.
What are the dues for 2024?
Dues are tied to income earned at Barnard. Income earned elsewhere is irrelevant.
